Starcraft 2 Zerg Queen

The Zerg have evolved! The Zerg have always been a fast paced race and that has not changed much. Units such as the Zergling, hydralisk, mutalisk, drone, are all returning to the game. So what's changing? First off a few new units such as the Corruptor and the Infestor have been added to the game. The largest difference is that the Zerg will have a new special unit: The Queen, which is a base defender unit that can be upgraded, cast spells, and upgrade base defenses. Probably the coolest thing about the Queen is that she can turn any of your buildings into defensive buildings. Another awesome feature is that all Zerg units can burrow, including the queen.

When is starcraft 2 coming out?

The clock has been ticking since the original announcement in mid 2007, and yet Blizzard has still not given an official release date for Starcraft 2. Today, Blizzard announced that the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational will take place in Paris, France on June 28th and 29th. I've got a feeling that they will announce the release of Starcraft 2 there, but my guess is as good as anyones.

Terran Sensor Tower

In any good RTS game, knowledge is power. The best starcraft and warcraft players used sensors such as the Terran sensor tower to detect any movement and gain valuable information on the opposition.

The range of the sensor tower has not yet been disclosed. Furthermore, we still don't know if there will be upgrades made to the sensor tower.

What we do know, however, is that the sensor towers are very easy to spot. This makes it easy for opponents to guess where your base is upon discovering a sensor tower. However, some players may setup sensor towers in fake base locations so that they can throw off their opponents.

Terran Crucio Siege Tank

The Crucio Siege Tank is built from a Factory. It is armed with Twin 90mm Cannons and 120mm Shock Cannons. The 90mm cannons are used while the unit is in assault mode, and the 120mm cannons are used while the unit is in siege mode.

The role of the Crucio Siege Tank is to provide Armored Support and Mobile Artillery. This makes the siege tank excellent at providing base defense, while leaving the option for attack.

Another sound strategy with this unit is to use it as a ranged attack against the enemy, in conjunction with towers or ground forces.

Protoss Observer

The Protoss Observer is built from a Robotics Facility. Its chief role is primarily to be a scout, and as such, it has no weapons of any kind. The Observer is an essential part to any army because they can detect cloaked or concealed enemies.

Its best to keep them off the front line and tucked safely behind some larger units. Opponents will often try and take out your Observers so that they can bring cloaked units into battle.

The main benefits of the Observer are that they can be built very quickly, and can use its sensors for long periods of time without draining too much energy.

New Unit: TF-620 Nomad

The TF-620 is built from the Starport and is a Battlefield Construction unit. This unit is essentially a combination between a manufacturing center and an observation post.

The nomad is also much like a mix between a lightweght air scout, an SVC and a sensor tower. The unit can detect cloaked or burrowed enemies and can construct temporary defense structures on the fly.

The nomad's ability to quickly setup these semi-permanent defense strucutures and provide detection for cloaked units make it an excellent choice for scouting and expanding.

Protoss Carrier

The Protoss Carrier Unit is built from the Stargate. The unit does not have any weapon batteries, however, it can deploy interceptor flights on the enemy. This is a particularly effective strategy against opponents with a large air fleet because this unit does excellent damage in air to air combat.

Much like the mothership, the Carrier is classified as a Capital Ship. The Carrier is enabled with weapons that allow it to strafe slower ground targets with plasma charges. This makes the Carrier very effective against both ground and air units.

My favorite part about the Carrier is that the interceptors are automatically manufactured and serviced inside the bays of the carrier. This makes the Carriers excellent for hit and run attacks, or a micro strategy that involves sweeping them through the battlefield.

Terran Battlecruiser

The Terran Battlecruiser is serious business. It is built from the Starport and is armed with Laser Batteries, a Yamato Cannon, and Plasma Torpedoes. It is the Terran race's Capital Ship. The ship comes standardly with Laser Batteries. The Yamato Cannon and Plasma Torpedoes are optional upgrades that make the Battlecruiser much more effective in combat by inreasing its damage.

Its nice to see that Blizzard has not changed the design of the Battlecruiser much from the original Starcraft game. The Battlecruiser's design still retains the distinctive hammerhead shape, which strikes fear into the heart of its opponents on the battlefield.

My favorite part about the Battlecruiser is the Yamato cannon. The Yamato cannon uses an "intense magnetic field" to focus a nuclear detonation into a "cohesive beam of energy". One very large mistake that you can make against a Terran player is to let them assemble too many Battlecruiser's with Yamato cannon's because they will take out your most important units very quickly with focus fire. The Plasma torpedoes are also an important upgrade because they can saturate a target area with a lethal deluge of fire, which can do major damage to ground fources. The only drawback to the Battlecruiser is that they are very expensive and time consuming to build and maintain.

Protoss Mothership

The Protoss mothership is a force to be reckoned with. It was one of the best units in the original Starcraft, and I'm proud to see that they've brought it back. The mothership builds from the Stargate and is a Capital ship. It is armed with a "Disruptor Pulse"

A deadly strategy for the Protoss race is to assemble several Protoss motherships. These units are highly effective against ground forces and structures.

The mothership looks to have kept much of its original design, although I'm sure that Blizzard has some surprises up its sleeve and will be introducing new functionality with this unit.

Terran Thor: Ultimate Heavy-assault Mech

The Terran have a new unit that is devastating to the opposition: Thor is an Ultimate Heavy-assault Mech that can be built from an SCV. It is armed with Thor's Hammer Particle Accelerators and a Bombardment Cannon, both of which do heavy duty damage.

Thor's two giant particle beams and dorsal artillery look as though they could be placed on a giant battleship. One of the advantages of Thor is that it can be built very quikcly by upgrading a SCV unit.

This Terran unit is exceptionally adept at doing damage to structures, so these are great to bring along on an early attack of the base.
